One Year Later

Hailey held out her finger next to mine, taking a picture of our engagement rings and hashtagging bride before uploading it to social media.

Last year, we had been the socialites of Forks. This year, we had grown into our brands. Minx had taken off—as I’d planned, of course. Every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears I’d poured into my business was gaining traction at a speed I’d expected—not too fast and not too slow. I was on a steady up-and-up, on par with my bestie, who was becoming a dominant force in the fashion industry out west.

Hailey had a creative niche that I didn’t have. She was vintage, and I was lux. We went together like orange juice and champagne or boots and fur.

“Do you ever regret leaving?” I asked.

“Nope,” Hailey said. “Best decision I’ve ever made.” She turned toward me. “Do you regret letting yourself fall in love?”

“Nope. Although it hasn’t been easy—that’s for damn sure. It’s hard enough, taking care of myself, but now, I have to think of another person! Good thing I won’t ever be a mom.” I swatted a fly away and sighed.

“Still no kids, huh? I think I’d like a few running around.

Dominick and I have talked about it. Course, he wants five.”

“What? Do you have any idea what that would do to your waist?

Things wouldn’t fit you like they do now! You might as well forget those designer labels you love.” I gasped.

Hailey clicked her tongue. “I don’t care about that as much anymore! It wouldn’t compare to having something Dominick and I made, cradled in my arms.”

“Couldn’t you make something less … needy? Like grow a houseplant and cradle it.”

“I love you so much.” She laughed.

I’d missed my best friend dearly. Preston had tried to fill the role she’d left, but he wasn’t much into manicures and mimosas.

But still, he tried. One morning, he’d even made brunch and burned it to a crisp. He scored an A for effort.

“Good. I know I’m difficult. Glad you can put up with me.” I squeezed her arm and snuggled in closer to her, like the old times when we’d lain on the bed back at the BAD house and contemplated life in a not-so-sober state of mind.

“So … about my wedding. I know I asked you to be the maid of honor. But I think I want to say to hell with it and elope. It’s all becoming too stressful for me,” Hailey said, pushing us into a swing on the hammock.

A chilly wind blew off the water, whipping her pink curls across my face. I sputtered a piece of hair out of my mouth and acted like I was surprised by her confession.

“Really? You’re going to run off again? You? Nah!” I teased.

She laughed and twisted her ring on her finger. “It’s so much more romantic though!” she said.

“No way! Do you know what’s romantic? Designing your own wedding dress and your fifteen bridesmaids dresses. And picking out crystal centerpieces. Oh, and creating bouquets! Don’t forget the cake, the food, the seating arrangements, the invitations.
